- a set of rules designed to protect public health, safety and general welfare by specifying a minimum acceptable level of safety for buildings and other structures. Building codes may also impose requirements for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, etc. There are many different building codes published by different organizations; a building code becomes law for a jurisdiction when formally enacted by the authority having jurisdiction.
