- 1) an electrical switch provides the ability to connect or disconnect one or more circuits, there are also many specialized electrical switches, see for example Static Transfer Switch, Limit Switch; 2) a telephone switch or circuit switch provides the ability to make selective connections between on or more inputs and outputs; 3) a network switch, such as an Ethernet switch, connects together multiple physical networks (or segments) into a larger network by selectively forwarding packets or frames while providing isolation between network segments, a switch may also provide the ability to monitor and manage network links; 4) a video switch or audio/video switch enables selective connection of multiple sources to one or more displays or recorders, see also Switched Digital Video and KVM switch.
